Touched the actual machine of the smartphone "OPPO X 2021" equipped with a take-up display (Dr. Yamane)
I was finally able to touch the actual machine of the smartphone "OPPO X 2021" equipped with the retractable display announced by OPPO in November 2020. The OPPO X 2021 is a concept model and is just a prototype. Although it will not be released, when I actually touched it, I felt that the degree of perfection was quite high.
The OPPO X 2021 looks the same as a normal smartphone when closed. It's a 6.7-inch smartphone itself. The size of the main body was about 163 x about 75 x about 9 mm in the measured value in the closed state.
The left side of the display has a curved shape. Smartphones with a display of this shape are common, so you won't feel any discomfort. If you look closely, there is no front camera.
The left side of the display, and the top and bottom are surrounded by bezels. The bezel is made of resin and slightly protrudes from the display.
The back is divided into left and right when the display (main body) is extended, but the divided part is cut diagonally. The inner edge of the camera-side part on the back has a slight bulge. This creates a gap between the moving part and the tread when placed on a flat surface.
If you check the actual machine, you can see that the display goes in and out through the narrow slit. A retractable display extends out from the gap on the left side, but the gap is not so noticeable. You can see that the display goes in and out through a fairly narrow slit.
The right side of the body is also curved, but this is because the bezel is bent and the display does not reach the right edge (the right side of the display is flat and sticks to the body). You can see the bulge on the bottom side of the bezel, not the display.
By swiping or double-tapping on the power button (fingerprint sensor) on the right side, the power of the motor stretches the display from 6.7 inches to 7.4 inches. As the display grows, so does the screen display.
Please watch the video about the movement around here.
With the display open, I tried pressing the surface with the pad of my finger, but it didn't dent or bend. The same goes for the part where the display on the left is wound, and you will not feel that it is equipped with a rollable display made of thin material.
If you turn off the display and look at it fully extended, you will see a slight vertical streak at the end when it is closed (when the display is fully wound). Like the foldable smartphone, the rollable display is made of a soft material that can be bent, so you can see such lines.
However, the streaks cannot be seen with the screen display on. You will not be bothered if it is commercialized as it is.
The camera has 48 million pixels and two TOFs. Since it is a concept model and will not be commercialized as it is, we have not tried the camera image quality this time.
Rewindable smartphones equipped with a rollable display are products that combine devices of two sizes, such as "smartphone + tablet", like foldable smartphones such as Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold 2 and Huawei Mate X2. is. When I touched the OPPO X 2021, I found it convenient to be able to smoothly change the screen size between 6.7 inches and 7.4 inches without having to open and close it with both hands like a folding smartphone.
It didn't wrinkle when the display shrank, but after a long period of use, dust can get in through the small gaps, which can scratch the surface when the display shrinks. In addition, the rollable display cannot be covered with a protective film, so durability is also a concern. The performance of the main unit is at a perfect level, but it can be said that one of the future issues is to further improve the quality of the rollable display.
